EXAMS AND GRADES:
Your grade is based on the sum of your four best exam grades on the four noncumulative in-class exams, and the Final Exam (which IS cumulative). The Final is optional IF YOU HAVE TAKEN ALL FOUR IN-CLASS EXAMS. In other words, YOU determine whether or not you take the Final Exam. If you take all four exams as scheduled, then whether you take the Final is entirely up to you. If you miss an in-class exam, you MUST take the Final. Obviously, it is easier to study for noncumulative exams than for a Final which will cover the entire term).

Each exam is worth 120 points. Your grade on each exam will be the number of points earned out of 120 (not 100). Your term grade will be based on a possible total of 480 points (4 exams x 120 points for each). The correct answers to each exam will be posted a few hours after each exam, on the course website. Your grade (number of points out of 120) will be posted on the website as soon as possible after each exam.

I do not assign letter grades to individual exams.

Letter grades will be assigned and posted ONLY after EXAM 4 but before the final class.

Grades will be curved.

Exams will cover material from readings, the text, lectures, films, and assignments. You are responsible for everything that happens in class, so if you miss a class, get notes from one or (even better) two classmates.

Exams will be primarily multiple choice, although true-false, short answer, matching items, and short essays will also be included. During the week before each exam, I will post a message describing its format.

Most parts of the exams are computer-scored, so be sure to bring a few #2 pencils with clean erasers to each exam.

All exams are closed book and you MAY NOT use any notes, dictionaries, or translating devices.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

NO MAKE-UPS WILL BE GIVEN for any reason. ALL EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN ONLY ON THE DATES AND AT THE TIMES SPECIFIED ON THE SYLLABUS. If you miss an exam, you MUST take the Final.
