Student Activities and the Department
HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Acceptance into graduate school and success in starting a career relating to psychology have often been influenced by a student's participation in the Psychology Club, or Psi Chi (the National Honor Society in Psychology), or by serving on student-faculty committees (for example, the Grade Appeals Committee, Curriculum Committee). These activities also provide an opportunity for majors to meet one another outside the classroom, and to interact with faculty.

For more information about the clubs, check with the Club bulletin board outside of Room 611HN, the Executive Committees of the clubs, or the faculty sponsor (Dr. Jason Young, 772-5566, Room 738HN). The Psychology Club and Psi Chi have mailboxes in Room 611HN, the Department Office.

psych-l ("l" as in Lemon, not the number one): psych-l is the on-line Hunter College Psychology Information and Discussion group/list. By subscribing (free), you keep up with what’s happening in the Department, hear about new courses in advance, have a chance to contribute your ideas, etc.

All meetings are announced on psych-l, as are job notices, research positions, etc. Earlier in this Handbook are instructions for subscribing. All you need is an e-mail account, and every student at Hunter has a free one.

PSYCHOLOGY CLUB

This club offers opportunities for students to become actively involved in matters related to Psychology through programs that include invited speakers, round-table discussions, trips to psychiatric facilities, etc. Everyone is welcome to join!

PSI CHI (Pronounced "Sigh-Kigh" both rhyme with "sky")

Psi Chi is a nationally recognized honor society of undergraduate and graduate students in psychology. Psi Chi is affiliated with the American Psychological Association and the Association of College Honor Societies. Graduate schools recognize membership in Psi Chi as one indication of scholarship in the field of psychology. At Hunter College, Psi Chi sponsors its own events and cooperates in planning events with the Hunter College Psychology Club.

To apply for membership in Psi Chi, you must:

a) have completed at least 9 semester hours (credits) in psychology;

b) be registered as a Psychology Major or Psychology Minor, OR for a program that is psychological in nature which is equivalent to such standings; and

c) have an overall cumulative GPA or at least 3.00 and a minimum GPA in Psychology courses of 3.50.

PHI BETA KAPPA

Phi Beta Kappa is a general honor society open to junior and senior liberal arts majors who meet strict eligibility criteria. These criteria include course distribution requirements, grade index requirements, and recommendations by professors. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is by invitation from the Society only. For more information, contact the Phi Beta Kappa office at Hunter..

HUNTER COLLEGE ANNUAL PSYCHOLOGY CONVENTION

In the Spring of each year, Psychology students organize a Psychology Convention. The schedule of events includes a full program of papers presented by students and faculty from Hunter and other colleges, addresses by invited speakers, and symposia, as well as social events. This student-run activity has been an exciting and informative event. All are invited to attend and participate. Watch for the announcements; better yet, join the clubs and help in the planning.
