MOST COURSES AT HUNTER COLLEGE, REGISTRATION TAKES PLACE BY PHONE, AND YOU SHOULD NOT COME TO THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT.

NO OVERTALLIES WILL BE GIVEN.

A complete description of and instructions for registering  are found in the Schedule of Classes distributed each semester by the Registrar’s Office. It is also found online at the Hunter Registrar Page (Advising is available on a limited basis during the Registration period, so check the Advising Bulletin Board for hours).
THE PSYCHOLOGY ADVISING OFFICE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL REGISTRATION PROCESS, SUCH AS ADDING, DROPPING, OVERTALLYING COURSES, ETC.  Once a course is closed, the only way to get into the course is to keep calling the telephone registration number to see if someone has dropped.  If there is an opening, then you may register for the class automatically through the regular phone registration process.  THE DEPARTMENT CANNOT PUT YOU INTO A COURSE THAT IS CLOSED.  PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSORS DO NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO SIGN YOU INTO THEIR COURSE ONCE IT HAS CLOSED.  GOING TO THE FIRST CLASS WILL NOT  HELP.

The only way you can get into a closed course
  is through the telephone registration system

? DO I NEED TO COME TO THE PSYCHOLOGY OFFICE TO REGISTER?
Most majors register directly with the Registrar by phone, and should not come to the Department Office to register. However, a small number of Psychology courses (listed below) require Department approval before you can enroll in them by phone with the Registrar.

ONLY those students taking the following courses must first obtain permission through the Department (See below and "Special Courses" for specific procedural information.) (Bring your transcript with you whenever you come to the Dept.):

  *PSYCH 201 --------------- Independent Study in Psychology

**PSYCH 306 and 307 ------ Seminar in Psychological Services I and II

  *PSYCH 395 --------------- Independent Research in Psychology

  *PSYCH 396 and 398 ------ Honors in Psychology

  *Written permission from a faculty sponsor is required for Department approval
**Written permission from the instructor is required for Department approval

Here's what you need to do at least a day or two before you try to register by phone, if you want to enroll in any of the above courses:
TO REGISTER FOR PSYCH 201. 395, 396, or 398, you must:

        (1) Meet the prerequisite requirements;

        (2) Find a full-time faculty member to sponsor you;

        (3) Get written permission from the faculty sponsor on the Psychology
             Department Sponsor Form, available in the Department Office-611HN.
             You must sign the form FIRST. Your signature on the form will affirm
              that you have satisfied the prerequisites. You must also indicate whether
              the class will count as A (Applied), B (Biopsychology), C (Cognitive),
              or D/S (Developmental/Social) (THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY)

       (4) Present the form, with both signatures, to the Department Receptionist or
            Secretary to be cleared for telephone registration.

TO REGISTER FOR PSYCH 306 AND 307

       (1) Meet the prerequisite requirements;

       (2) Sign up for an interview with the professor who is teaching the course;

       (3) The professor will tell you WHAT PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW
            WHEN PERMISSION IS GRANTED.

? HOW DO I KNOW WHAT KIND OF RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES OR
     FIELD PLACEMENTS ("Internships") ARE AVAILABLE?

Consult the list of "Faculty and Administrative Staff" and "Volunteer Opportunities". The Career Counseling Office (See Paula Wicklow, 8th floor, Hunter East) and Student Services (11th floor East) also may have placements that can earn PSYCH 201 credit (e.g., Peer Counseling, Liberty Partnership). See Dr. Seegmiller about the Advising Assistantships.

? HOW DO I FIND A FACULTY MEMBER WHO WILL BE WILLING TO
      SPONSOR ME IN ONE OF THESE COURSES FOR PSYCHOLOGY
      CREDIT?

The most common way is to ask a professor with whom you have taken a class. Have some idea of what you want to do. Students also read through the list of faculty and their interests, and approach a faculty member who is working in an area closest to the student’s interests, or is actively conducting research. Consult with an Advisor for additional help. Try to get this done BEFORE registration even starts! Remember that Professors may not be around campus between semesters or during the summer, so those are not good times to try to get signatures.

? WHEN IS REGISTRATION AND HOW WILL I FIND OUT?

The Registrar posts notices around the College, and mails you information about, and the scheduled dates for, phone registration. The information is also posted on the registrar web site. The Psychology Department does NOT mail registration information.

As soon as you get the mailer from the Registrar, or check their web site, check the bulletin boards in the corridor outside of Room 611HN for information. The full schedule of classes is available first  through Hunter’s homepage on the worldwide web.

? I TRIED TO REGISTER BUT THE COURSE I WANTED WAS ALREADY CLOSED. HOW CAN I GET INTO THE COURSE?

Psychology courses close early. We suggest that you telephone the registrar at the earliest possible time allotted to your group (groups are based on the number of credits you have completed before the current semester began). The more credits you have completed, and the earlier you use the phone registration system, the better chance you have of getting into the course you want. But have some alternate choices ready. NO STUDENT WILL BE ADDED AFTER A COURSE HAS CLOSED.

Professors DO NOT have the authority to have you added to their class. Notes from professors admitting you will not be honored.

If a courseyou are trying to register for over the phone is closed, the only way of being admitted is to keep calling.  Someone may drop and you may e lucky enough to get that person's spot in the class.  But this can only happen using the Registrar's Telephone Registration System.  THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT CANNOT HELP YOU GET INTO A CLASS.
