Students who choose to complete a second
major may not be required to declare a minor. In order to be released from
the minor requirement, written approval must be obtained from both major
departments. The Psychology Department has already notified Graduation
Audit in writing that the Psychology Dept. automatically waives the minor
for all Psychology majors who also complete a second major. Graduation
Audit may, however, require a note from your second major department.
The MINOR usually consists of 12 credits
in an area related or complementary to the major. There is a great deal
of leeway in the choice of a minor. The Minor should be strategically chosen
with the following considerations in mind: (1) a Psychology Major should
be able to demonstrate competence, interest, and familiarity in an area
outside of the Social Sciences; (2) choose a minor which will complement
and strengthen the Major in the eyes of a graduate school program or prospective
employer.
There are lots of minors that are appropriate
for Psychology Majors, although students planning to attend Ph.D. graduate
school should, whenever possible, elect their minor from anthropology,
biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, physiology, sociology, or
statistics. In contrast, let’s say that you want to become a "Domestic
Violence Counselor;" Women’s Studies might be one of many reasonable minor
choices. Note that the minors in some Departments at Hunter consist of
more than 12 credits (e.g., Biology generally requires 18 credits).
The Department does not permit
split minors
Consult with an Advisor about your minor.
Q & A
? WHAT IS A SPLIT MINOR AND DOES THE PSYCHOLOGY
DEPARTMENT ACCEPT SUCH MINORS?
Split Minors consist of courses taken from two departments (3 credits
in one department, 9 in another; or 6 in one department and 6 in another).
The Psychology Department
does not permit split minors.
? CAN I USE MY
MINOR CREDITS TO FILL DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS?
If your minor courses are all taken in
one department, Yes. However, no more than half (usually 2
of the 4 courses, or 6 of the 12 credits of the minor) can be counted toward
the Distribution Requirement. However, NONE of the credits applied toward
a Split Minor (3 credits in one department, 9 in another; or 6 in one department
and 6 in another) may also be used for the Distribution Requirement.
? DOES IT MATTER
WHICH COURSES I TAKE TO FILL MY MINOR REQUIREMENT?
It depends on what minor you choose.
Courses taken in your minor should support your major. In many
cases, any 12 credits will do, although some courses may be more relevant
than others. In addition, some departments have
specific requirements for their minors. For example:
Biology:
18 credits--BIO 100 and 102, and suggested 2 courses at
least at the 200-level
Chemistry: 18 credits--CHEM
102-105 & CHEM 222-225
Chinese: 12 credits beyond CHIN 101
& 102
Dance: 6 credits beyond DAN 111, 112,
& 221
Education: Consult directly with the
Education Advisor (QUEST-Early Childhood and Elementary)
German: 12 credits--at least 6 credits
chosen from GERMAN 301-349

help you make your choice.
