REQUIREMENTS FOR 
THE PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR
and 
PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS
 
 
          TO DECLARE THE MAJOR:  
                  -A grade of C- or CR or better in STAT 113, MATH 120,  
                   or the equivalent of Pre-Calculus on the MATH  
                   PLACEMENT TEST (See the Dolciani Math Center,  
                    3rd fl. HN for information) 
                  -At least a B in a 100-level Psychology Course 
 
 
 
 
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NEW MAJOR
  
  • Not credited toward the Major, but required:
- PSYCH 100, and  
- One additional 100-level course  

(These two 100-level psychology courses, although required, are not included in the major. They may, however, be used to meet the Distribution Requirements in Social Science - Category VI)


  • The NEW Psychology Major consists of 26 credits in psychology, above the 100 level, including:

        STUDENTS FOLLOWING THE NEW CURRICULUM: 

Must have passed the one-year lab science sequence 
before  enrolling 
in EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
AND 
 

ALL STUDENTS :

1) the new Mathematics requirement MUST be completed BEFORE enrolling in Psychological Statistics, and 

2) Psychological Statistics and Experimental Psych MUST be completed BEFORE taking courses above PSYCH250  

3) ENGL 120 MUST BE COMPLETED WITH A C OR CR OR BETTER BEFORE ENROLLING IN psych 249 OR 250 
 
 

Students not in conformity with these requirements will be officially withdrawn from the course by the department after the second week of classes. At least half of your major and minor must be completed AT HUNTER (not taken on permit or transferred in)
* Although a course may meet the requirements for more than one area (See course list), the same course may not be applied to more than one area. 
 
Psychology courses taken to fulfill major requirements may not be taken on a credit/no credit basis.
 
Important information
To graduate as a Psychology Major at Hunter, at least half of your major and half of your minor credits must have been taken at Hunter. Courses taken at any other school, e.g., on permit, are considered to be transferred courses. 

Students whose career goals include professional work in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling should take either PSYCH 201 (Independent Study), PSYCH 295 (Peer Advising), PSYCH 306/307 (Seminar in Psychological Services), PSYCH 395 (Independent Research), or PSYCH 396/398 (Honors in Psychology) as appropriate. Note that each may be used only once to fulfill major requirements. 

Psychology Majors are encouraged to gain computer proficiency by taking courses in the Computer Science Department such as CSCI 120 and CSCI 100. 

After coompleting PSYCH 248, PSYCH 249 or PSYCH 250, and ENGL 120, Qualified Undergraduate majors may enroll in graduate Psychology courses to fulfill some of these requirements. Permission of the Instructor and the Graduate Advisor is required. 

 


Education Major/Minors MAY NOT use Child Psychology (PSYCH 210) from any Psychology Dept. for credit towards the Major.
