I. PREREQUISITES
TO DECLARING A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR
It is highly recommended that
you declare your Psychology Major as early as possible.
ALL students
wishing to declare a major in psychology must meet all of the following
criteria before they may officially declare their Psychology Major.
1. Completion of 3 credits in Mathematics
with a minimum grade of C or Credit.
*This should
be met by either STAT 113 (which meets the Mathematics
and Science Distribution, Category I, requirements), MATH 120 (which currently
does not), or by passing the Calculus Readiness Test (Contact the Dolciani
Math Learning Center 3rd floor HN well in advance of registration for
exam schedule information). (Consult with the Advising Office if you have
taken other college math with a Hunter number above MATH 120..)
2. Completion of any 100-level Psychology
course with a minimum grade of B.
*Note that PSYCH 100 is a
prerequisite for all other 100-level Psychology courses, and that PSYCH
100 and one additional 100-level psychology course are required but not
credited toward the major.
3. In addition, completion of ENGL 120
is strongly recommended (and is required before you may enroll in any
Psychology course numbered above PSYCH 248.)
Transfer Students may meet these requirements with courses taken
at the previous institution, upon presentation of a transcript from that
institution. Second-degree students must consult with an Advisor to learn
which of these requirements are applicable in their special case.
II.
DECLARING PSYCHOLOGY OFFICIALLY AS YOUR MAJOR
All Hunter students must declare a
major and a minor (except students who are double-majors) prior to graduation.
It is recommended that students should declare their major as soon as possible
so that all course requirements can be completed in sequence.
In order to become an officially registered
major, a Hunter College Major/Minor Approval Form must be obtained from
Oasis, located on 2nd floor HN. Bring the COMPLETED form and
your transcript(s) to the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office,
Room 611 HN. After completing some additional forms available in the Department
Office, you must see an Advisor to obtain the required signatures.
Short Q & A
? WHAT IF I DECLARED
ANOTHER MAJOR BEFORE, BUT NOW I WANT TO BE A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR?
You must go to your former major
department and have an advisor DROP you as a major by signing the "Change
From" section on the new Declaration of Major Form. This must be done BEFORE
it is to by signed by the Undergraduate Psychology Department Advisor.
Students who have not dropped their previous major will not be allowed
to declare their Psychology Major.
? I TRANSFERRED TO HUNTER,
BUT I DECLARED MY PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR AT MY OTHER COLLEGE. DO I HAVE TO DECLARE
MY MAJOR AGAIN AT HUNTER?
YES. Transfer students, including
those in the CUNY system, must file new Declaration of Major Forms at Hunter.
