Cutting Issues
Direct Action Organizing
- Shift from individual to commonalties
- 2nd level- How you might actually change problems
Power
Issue is a means to developing power.
D.A.O- (direct action organizing)
- Empowerment
- Beginning to understand dynamics of Power
- What kind of power do you have?
- What type of power those you are influencing have?
Goal:
- Altering Balance of Power
- Winning one issue is not the goal: it is not enough
- Governments give and take that is why D.A.O is to build an enduring organization
- Power is more enduring when attached to an organization compared with an individual.
Power is abstract- overt or covert?
3 Forms of Power:
- Stick- Power as Force (ex. You do this or else)
- The Deal- Power based on exchange.
- The Kiss- " Creation of obligations" engaging in a behavior because of loyalty. (ex. Nationalism)
Political Power
- Are you trying to change a law?
-know your population, politicians, etc.
Consumer Power-
- power based on your assumption’s
- boycott, class action suit
- effect economic balance of resources.
- Start at the easiest spot
Legal/ Regulatory Power
- winning power in court
- can be exerted with out being used.
- Knowing the law and the judge ( if in court)
Strikes
- getting a corporation to respond.
