Sociology 315 J. Hammond Assignment 1 part 2 due October 16 (new date) Read E.P.Thompson's article, "Time, Work-discipline, and Industrial Capitalism" and the interview with David Landes, "Chronometry: The Science that Rules our Lives." These two articles discuss, from different perspectives, the new understanding of time which came to dominate western culture around the time of the industrial revolution. Though they identify essentially the same facts, they do not agree on the interpretation of those facts. The two articles treat the change in attitudes and the accompanying change in the conditions of work very differently. (Landes discusses work only briefly; but from his direct comments about work and his general attitude toward the development of the clock, one can infer what his attitude is.) Write an essay contrasting Thompson's and Landes's presentations of the new understanding of time, giving an account of their main arguments. Further, discuss the contrast between their respective attitudes toward the change. To demonstrate the contrast, cite key passages from each article. From Thompson's and Landes's discussions of time and the way people perceived it before and after the Industrial Revolution, what do you conclude is each author's view of the purpose of work in general and industrial work in particular? The Writing Center has a handout on comparison-and-contrast essays which you may want to look up. Your essay should be 4-6 typed double-spaced pages. It may incorporate as much as you find appropriate of the summary of Thompson that you have already written. For purposes of references and bibliography, you may cite the Landes interview as if it were written by him, since it consists almost entirely of his words. You must follow the handout "Procedures for Writing Assignments."
