Sociology 325.02: Sociology of human rights J. Hammond Assignment 1, Part 2 Due March 13 (Part of this is a repetition of assignment 1, part 1. Use what you did for that assignment as a base.) Read the International Bill of Rights. It consists of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. It appears in the appendix to Nickel, _Making Sense of Human Rights_; in _Human Rights: A Compendium of International Instruments_ (on reserve); and in several other sources. Identify a significant substantive right guaranteed by at least one of these documents. Discuss the obligations it imposes on governments. Propose one or more empirical indicators which would enable you to judge whether a country honors this right or not. (That is, what evidence would you need to collect to determine whether the country is honoring the right?) Then, for one country, present appropriate empirical evidence to evaluate whether it is living up to its obligations. Submit a paper of 2-3 typed, double-spaced pages, with references (footnotes, endnotes, or parentheses) and bibliography. Return assignment 1, part 1 with this assignment.
