Oral reports may be given in the second and third months of the semester (i.e. October and November in the fall semester, March and April in the spring semester). To give an oral report you must choose a topic from the syllabus and present your report on the date that the topic is scheduled to come up. You must come to see me in my office hours at least two weeks ahead of time to clear the topic with me, discuss it, and set the date, and then come to see me again within the week before your presentation to discuss your preparation for it. For your presentation you should study the assigned readings for the topic and then find an additional reading on the same topic (which must be cleared with me). You should give a presentation of fifteen minutes. In your presentation, concentrate on the additional reading but show its relation to the assigned readings. Don't just say what each says; present an integrated reading based on all of them. Does the new reading agree/disagree with/supplement the assigned readings? The requirement for lead time means that you must have your first meeting with me, with a tentative choice of supplementary reading, by November 15 in the fall semester and by April 15 in the spring semester. Presentations will be graded on relevance to the chosen topic, interest, clarity, coherence, and stimulation of discussion by other students. The possible grades range from zero to six points, and the number of points awarded will be added to your final grade (for example, if you receive the full six points, your grade will be increased by 2/3 of a letter grade, e.g. from C to B to or B+ to A) except that no grades will be raised above the maximum of A+.
