Class of Sep 15 Afterthoughts

(This was sent via e-mail to each student. Just in case, someone has trouble to access his/her e-mail, I post it on the course page in addition.)

Dear Class:
This is a message sent to everyone in the class. For those who missed this class or missed some of what was said, here are a couple of reminders and a few new items:

1. Get a copy of the new 1997 ACS Guide to Software from the Hunter bookstore (general reference section, not course shelf) for 5.35$. This will give you details on using e-mail, Win95, and more.

2. The quick way to access your e-mail is to boot your station in DOS/WIN3, then select "communication", "telnet" and follow the instrcution on screen. --
The alternative way is to use Netscape (especially when you do some web browsing anyway) and connect to the following URL:
telnet://hejira.hunter.cuny.edu
(Use "shiva" instead of "hejira" if your account resides on this machine. Information about your account is available from the Hunter College home page.)

3. Before you do anything else, change your initial password (hcxxxxxx, where xxxxxx are the alst digits of your SSN) to something only you will know. To initiate this, type "passwd" at any [shiva]/[hejira] prompt. Follow on-screen instrcutions.

4. To access your e-mail, send new e-mail type "pine" at any [shiva]/[hejira] prompt. Check ACS guide for more details.

5. I will be away Th (Sep 18). You are supposed to show up anyway and work in groups to get started on doing the research for your paper. Prof. Halling will be there to let you in and he will stick around, but he will not be able to answer questions.

6. Make sure to visit the course page, check for new documents (look into folders as well) and  save/print documents that contain information you have not fully absorbed yet, like the guide on keeping a bookmark file.

7. I will be checking my e-mail for the last time around noon Wednesday this week. E-mail arriving later will not be answered till Monday. But even if you don't have specific questions (or don't want to ask them), send me a short e-mail so that I have an indication that you accessed your e-mail account successfully.

8. If you want to send e-mail to other students, check the address list on the course page for individual addresses.

Have fun surfing the web, MK.
