In a Chinese "wedding", various family elders take turns sitting in chairs while the bride and groom present each with a cup of tea.  If they drink the beverage, we have gained their permission and approval to marry.

Tom's mom drinks while dad asks for coffee (He's a joker).

 The elders then present us with gold jewelry or red envelopes containing money.
