According to the United States 2000 Census, there are 3.4 million people of Puerto Rican origin living on the United States (US) mainland. The population on the Island is approximately 3.8 million. About half of the total Puerto Rican population lives outside of the Island in the so-called Diaspora communities in the US. The following tables provide a general picture on the concentration of Puerto Ricans by cities and states.
