Dr. Alizah Brozgold Speaks at Hunter College

From the November 14, 1994 Psych News

By Douglas Goff

Dr. Alizah Brozgold spoke on November 7 at a forum sponsored by the Psychology Advising Office and the Psychology Club. Dr. Brozgold is a rehabilitation psychologist successfully practicing at St. Vincent's Hospital. A rehabilitation psychologist plays an integral part in the overall treatment of those that are afflicted with traumatic physiological complications or surgery (i.e. stroke, near fatal car accidents, cancer, coronary bypass, etc.). The nurse, for example, will notice developing bed sores, application of medication, or cooperation of the patient to the reception of treatment. The physical therapist reports the ability of the recovering patient to bend their arm thirty degrees this week as opposed to twenty-five degrees last week. The doctors are interested more with the results of CAT-Scans or MRIs. The rehabilitation psychologist assesses their psychological equilibrium through specific psychological tests and makes an assessment and then presents a recommendation of treatment.

The various qualities Dr. Brozgold brought with her before beginning her studies in psychology contributed to her success. Her aptitude with languages is an immense quality in an ever shrinking world. The skills she possessed as a Publisher and Editor were of great value towards her ability to communicate most effectively, which led to her being awarded a Ph.D. through the CUNY system.

Dr. Brozgold stressed the importance of writing skills for anyone yearning for a Graduate School or professional life on the whole. If at times overcome by all the perspectives, treatments, statistics, or various aspects of psychological philosophies, she suggests you attempt looking at it as if it were a foreign language (because in essence, it is).

If you were unable to attend, we have the presentation on videotape. For more information, please contact the Psychology Department Advising Office.
