Excerpts from Psych News

Message from the Chairman: Dr Herbert Krauss

From the November 14, 1994 Psych News

Interview by Nicole A. Burke

I would like to say welcome to the Psychology Department and the Psychology Club, both to majors and to students taking our courses. You will find that Psychology is living through an extraordinarily interesting time in part because of it's development as a cognitive science, and in part because we still need to understand what it means to be a human being in this society. Psychology is especially interesting because it is one of the few disciplines that offer the opportunity to be involved in an academic study that also leads in some instances to professional work.

I understand that many of the people taking psychology at Hunter College find it a very frustrating experience. We have over 1100 psychology majors this semester and our resources for educating them have not grown. The department and I hope to make it as easy and interesting as possible to take psychology as a major. We recognize that because of the lack of resources it might be a frustrating experience. Efforts are being made to secure the additional funds necessary for the department. At this time, the Psychology Department is doing an extraordinarily fine job with our current budget and our students are doing well academically.
