Writing Skills. The National Institute of Mental Health
- Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training
(NIMH-COR) Program stresses the importance of acquiring strong
writing and communication skills. Therefore, as part of the
weekly seminars, the Coordinator arranges for students to attend
special sessions with the Director of the Writing Center at
Hunter College. The Writing Center also may assign personal
tutors to NIMH-COR Program students to help them with papers and
individual writing difficulties.
Computer Workshops. In many cases, students entering
college have little knowledge about computers. The NIMH-COR
Program provides instruction for its students in workshops
organized through the weekly seminars and through additional
assistance from the Academic Computer Services at Hunter College.
Mathematics
and Statistics Skills. Each participating department in
the NIMH-COR Program requires statistics for its majors, but over
the years the Steering Committee has come to the conclusion that
these courses are not sufficient preparation for NIMH-COR Program
students. Consequently, the program may in the future organize a
series of workshops to review basic math as part of the seminars
held at the Math Learning Center (MLC). As part of this effort,
NIMH-COR Program students would take a diagnostic test to
determine the levels of their math skills. Based on their
individual performances, the MLC would then assign them to the
appropriate workshop. Then, following the model established by
the Writing Center, NIMH-COR Program students could seek the help
of tutors to work with them on individual difficulties.
