The National Institute of Mental Health - Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training (NIMH-COR) Program at Hunter College

Evaluation of Students and Program

Evaluation of Students. The Coordinator monitors the progress of students on a regular basis, both during and at the end of every term. In consultation with mentors, the Coordinator reviews the student's work on research projects. Students meet regularly throughout the semester with the Director and Coordinator. During these meetings students have the opportunity to discuss their research and make plans for the coming term. They also have the chance to respond to the grades and evaluations they have received from their mentors. NIMH-COR Program Scholars are formally evaluated and interviewed at the end of their first year during the late spring. Although first year NIMH-COR Program students do not compete with new candidates, failure to maintain satisfactory progress in the program can be grounds for a decision not to continue the student for the second year of the program.

Program Evaluation. A number of mechanisms exist for monitoring the effectiveness of the NIMH-COR Program. These include student input through an elected representative who speaks to the Director, Coordinator and Steering Committee and a formal written evaluation by the students, given to the Steering Committee each semester. The various faculty members involved in the program also have the chance to give their opinion of the program on a regular basis. Furthermore, NIMH requires a yearly detailed progress report on the program. NIMH also reviews the NIMH-COR Program at Hunter College every five years in order to determine if funding should be continued. In preparation for that event, the Director must prepare a comprehensive document describing the successes and failures of all aspects of the program. These documents are all available to NIMH-COR Program students.
