Director
The National Institute of Mental Health - Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training (NIMH-COR) Program Director is ultimately responsible for the NIMH-COR Program, S/he reports directly to the program administrators at NIMH, assumes financial responsibility for the Program, consults with the Coordinator regularly about the day-to-day activities of the Program, assumes responsibility for organizing the Steering Committee, serves as spokesperson for the Program, coordinates efforts for minority education with the administration of Hunter College, writes progress reports and grant renewals, seeks private funding; and provides guidance to students as they prepare to present papers at professional meetings.
Coordinator
The NIMH-COR Program Coordinator advises students about the courses in which they should enroll, helps them define their fields of interest, prepares them for what to expect in their research placements, establishes and monitors mentor-student relationships, keeps records of the student's progress, provides feedback on written material (e.g. research summaries, personal statements), and helps students make plans for graduate school.
The Coordinator also meets with faculty supervisors and students to discuss their progress. When necessary, s/he also finds new placements for students. The Coordinator organizes the NIMH-COR Program meetings and seminars and serves as a liaison between the program and the various services at Hunter College. The roles of the Coordinator and Director often overlap and one may take on certain duties of the other as the need arises.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee consists of faculty members from the participating departments, including the NIMH-COR Program Director and Coordinator, and one elected NIMH-COR Program student representatives. The Steering Committee is responsible for evaluating the progress of the students in the NIMH-COR Program. Committee members also determine the allocation of funds and the guidelines for periodic review of the budget. They occasionally help choose faculty participants and recommend placements of students in laboratories. They may also suggest speakers for the seminars and choose minority scholars for the mini-course, as well as advise the Director and Coordinator on all aspects of policy, and serve as liaisons between department chairs and the program's administration.
Admissions Committee
The Admissions Committee is comprised of the faculty members who serve on the Steering Committee and two elected NIMH-COR Program student representatives not on the Steering Committee. They are responsible for interviewing and evaluating applicants to the NIMH-COR Program and for selecting students for admission to the Program.
