About Our New York
Of New York City's 8.1 million people, some 36 percent, or nearly 3 million, are foreign- born. First and second-generation New Yorkers together account for almost 65 percent of the city's population. Today's immigrants tend to cluster in particular neighborhoods, just as they did a century ago, when immigration was also at an historic peak.
The images you will find on this web site are the work of Hunter College students who are participating in an ongoing project called Our New York. The project focuses on continuity and change in historically immigrant neighbor- hoods, in an attempt to gain a greater understanding of the rich contributions of the immigrant population to New York City's continual development.
